Good Reads
It's easy to put aside abortion access if you live in IL or another state with similar open laws. But the reality is that bans in other states affect your access, costs, and quality of care too. From the article, "wait times for an abortion appointment [at an IL clinic] increased from two to three days to two to three weeks." This seems like a good argument for why access states should be committing public dollars and the federal government should be helping them to do so. State funding would be - in part - a subsidy for out-of-state residents. But, unless we have entered a twisted reality where we can morally and legally bar out-of-state residents from healthcare, those funds are also needed to support continued care for the rest of us.
View from the Anti-camp: The hot bad boy from Growing Pains (Ok, the 80s sitcom hot bad boy from Growing Pains), just released an anti-abortion film. Here is the preview, I will probably not be throwing a watch party, but if I find a free copy I'll let you all know.
Events in the News
Wow, South Carolina's legislature is an exciting place. Contrary to my prediction, SC Senate did not pass a total ban on abortion. Instead, they added restrictions to the current law (six-weeks) and kicked it back to the SC House. Republican Sen. Tom Davis threatened to filibuster. And, with three Republican women in the Senate, a fifth GOP colleague, and all the chamber’s Democrats joining him in opposition, there were not enough votes to stop him.
Abortion rights will be on Michigan ballots in November, and if accepted by voters would enshrine abortion rights into the state's constitution.
Legal Updates
Five anonymous residents and the group Hoosier Jews for Choice are challenging Indiana's abortion ban, arguing that the ban would violate their religious rights.
