This Week in Abortion - October 15
A collection of good reads, events from the week, and occasional insights from me, Rachel Leven.
Easy and short read this week as my day job and other life needs got in the way. I am also working on some more original writing, hopefully sending some of it next week!
Good Reads
Last week I highlighted an article about shield laws that focused on providers. This week I want to lift up another of the increasing divide between states. A recent law in California bars California-based companies from producing records for abortion-related search warrants. So, Califonia could sue Google or Uber, etc. for handing over info to Texas law enforcement that’s related to an abortion case. Sounds great at first, but law enforcement in Texas can also sue these companies for not handing over the information. Once again, it’s great to see protections out there, and I have this feeling of existential dread for the future of the country that just won’t go away.
Black Friday is out, Vasectomy Friday is in. Really, interest in sterilization procedures for men and women has increased in the months following the Dobbs decision.
Lately, I’ve been seeing an increase in articles showing how bans affect the whole of women’s healthcare, not just the care available to pregnant women. It’s almost certainly the parent in me, but I found this personal story from Good Morning America particularly powerful.

Legal Updates
The U.S. Supreme Court declined a case that questioned whether unborn fetuses should have constitutional rights, part of the push for fetal personhood law.
Indiana Supreme Court is bypassing the usual appeal process in order to take up the state’s abortion ban itself, but is keeping the ban on hold.
